Continuing the journey in His grip.......

After being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer on October 22, 2007, I realized that raising money for breast cancer makes me feel like I am doing something instead of feeling helpless against this disease. This diagnosis was a big shock to us. I was 40 years old, always very healthy and I had 2 small children(3&1). Breast cancer does NOT run in my family.
With a very supportive husband, family & friends, I made it through months of chemo and major surgeries. As of April 3,2008, by God's grace, I am cancer free!!!! I decided that I wanted to continue the fight against breast cancer by forming a team called ”Kat’s Courage” and raising money to help put an end to this disease. There were so many breast cancer survivor's who encouraged me during my fight. To see these women not only survive breast cancer but thrive after breast cancer, gave me this courage to face my fears. I can only hope to encourage others in the same way. We have just completed the 2010 Susan G. Komen 3-day for The Cure. We will continue to support different organizations that we believe in who are fighting against cancer and working for the cancer patient.

starting early

This year, I am so excited to be starting early with my team building and fund raising. ( I need to start early with my training walks too) We already have 7 people on our team and it is still February.  Me(Kat), Scott, Melonie, Cherie and Debra, who have all walked in the 3-day together before. We also have 2 new walkers, Kimberly and Joanne(another Survivor). That is so encouraging to me. I know there are many others who will join us too but this is the official 2010 team so far.  Last year we spent some time putting together the Double Bubble Breast cancer Bus.  We had so much fun doing it and we had a lot of support from people in our community.  We are very thankful for  the great paint job that MAACCO here in Stockbridge did for us.  It is really fun to drive it around and notice all of the stares and smiles.  You can see people getting out their cameras and turning around to get a 2nd look.  That is what it is about to me.  Bringing awareness by doing something fun and getting attention, making it easier to talk about and not so scary looking.  It wasn't so long ago that many women died because they were embarrassed to tell anyone about their fear of having breast cancer. Women are still dying today because they think that they are not at risk and so they ignore lumps like I did but some wait too late.  That is why I named our pink VW bus the "Double Bubble Breast Cancer Bus".  It does look like it could be a huge piece of bubble gum but that is not the bubbles we are talking about here, haha. We have some great ideas for fund raising this year. I am placing the t-shirt order real soon and I am sure they will be as cool as the ones we had last year. I was so excited that we sold 150 of them last year so we will order even more this year. Scott and I are having a brain storming meeting this weekend with some really great people who I have met this year who are doing some great things in the breast cancer world.  They have really fun creative ideas for raising funds. We will let you know what ideas we come up with to make this year the best yet for our team "Kat's Courage". Thanks for your support.  Love~ Kat

October is a BIG month for me

I was diagnosed with breast cancer October 2007. My first "Kat's Courage" team formed after I finished treatment and began to recover from surgery.  As my team started to grow and I started raising funds and training for the walk, I began to feel stronger and stronger.  I began to feel like I was getting my life back! I had a team of 11 friends who together raised $27,500.  In October 2008, we walked 60 miles for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-day for a Cure.  We felt like rock stars as we walked across that finish line into a room full of thousands of people cheering for us.  We knew we were a part of something BIG. In October 2009,we had a team of 14 who walked in the ATL 2-day walk for breast cancer and raised over $14,000 for local breast cancer charities.  On October 22-24, 2010 we will once again be participating in the Atlanta SGK 3-day for a Cure .  This is such an amazing event to be a part of.  Each team member is committed raising a minimum of $2,300 and training to walk 60 miles over the course of 3-day's.  This is a big challenge and there are so many reasons why I want to continue. It is so amazing to me to hear that the ATL walk alone raised over 9 million dollars last year. I feel like a big part of the reason I am alive today is because of the advancements in breast cancer treatment that have been directly related to SGK. I would love to see my team grow.  If any of you are interested in joining 'Kat's Courage" there is plenty of time to train and raise money for this years walk.  We like to work together as a team to help each other raise money and train for walking in this event.  Together we can put a stop to this disease. Thank you so much for your support!
